Capitalism,
while a
productive and practical system
at many levels,
has a soft underbelly
where
the ignoble among us
feed.
|
It is 2012 and...
"Our love is kept confined, entombed:
A Golden Bird in a darkened Room."
- from "The Great Legacy."
Today,
in our busy world, we face not a wave, but a
veritable tsunami of negative energy. From the self serving wickedness
on Wall
Street to the selling out of political systems to private interest, to
the mindless killing of innocent people abroad to the unconcionable
rape of the
earth for oil; from the frightening number of people living in
poverty
to the rising tide of disaffected youth, to the mindless violence in
our
theaters and homes, one shudders to imagine the damage to our
collective social fabric...and to the world we are leaving to our
children.
But,
take heart. There is hope. For buried in our basic natures, of
each and every one of us, are seeds of possibility. They need
only to be awakened to take root and grow.
O, little creature formed of joy and mirth: go love without the help of any thing on earth. – William Blake
For we are, you see, born with love in our hearts.
Wild, sweet, enduring, overarching, inexhaustible and
enormously powerful, love and only love, in its myriad forms, can save us and
our planet from the dark forces of untrammeled greed that threaten to engulf us all.
So go ye forth,
wrapped in a garment of good intent and love, unconditionally, the world and everything in it,
spreading joy as you might scatter seeds, for only then will roses of
compassion grow where once stood fields of thistles.
“We
cannot all do great things but we can do small things
with great love.”
-Mother Teresa
Know that even the smallest act of love is cloaked in majesty and has a
great and mystical power to disarm, to salve, to
sooth, to dissipate negative thoughts and energy; to find forgiveness
in an unforgivcing land and to enhance the way people value themselves and each other.
And know as well, and this for good reason, that even the smallest act of love sends ripples of loving
energy out into the world in ever-expanding circles, where that love does great good in
ways and in places one might never imagine, frequently returning to the
sender in the form of someone else’s loving energy... concealed in an unmarked package.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word,
a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of
which have the potential to turn a life around.
-Leo Buscaglia, American author
The time has come...
...to speak of love openly, publically: one way or the other its simple, warming light must find its way into the boardrooms of the nation: it must have a
seat at the table, a voice in our debates, a vote at our polling
booths. It must be as a lamp in our lives: as a lens through
which we view the unfolding world before us so we might make decisions in the best interests of the most people. We must be not
afraid to ask, "Where is the love?" in open debate...or, if need be, to shout the question
from the highest hill.
The
time has come for each of us to speak its name and feel its sacred
power; and to encourage others to do the
same.
For we see before us in our day a rising tide of anguish and pain brought about by those who, under various guises and deceits, manipulate to their own advantage the levers of state, or corporate or clerical control, leaving a host of badly wounded souls in their
wake.
Love and only love can rise to their defence.
So
let us go forward with renewed compassion, deepened patience and in
a spirit of forgiveness for those who have wronged us, for often, they know not what they do. For
it is the collective will of the people, united in a spirit of good
will, each working in their own corner, each in their own way that will
make it possible for us to find our way back to the garden. And then...
The day will come when, after harnessing the winds, the tides and gravitation,…we shall harness the energies of Love.
And on that day, for the second time in the history of the world,…man will have discovered fire.
– Pierre Teillard de Chardin

A Few Words of Encouragement
Now it is quite reasonable, quite understandable, that you might think
the task of bringing this love back into our troubled world is too much, too
formidable a task; that the road is too long, the mountain too high, the whole
task insurmountable.
Just remember: the longest journey begins with a single step.
Let not the hollow claims or threats, the dire predictions, or the
false promises of the so called authorities sway you from your
appointed mission to bring love and human decency back into our wounded
world at any level you can. Focus your mind at all times on your mission and remember that...
One
word frees us of the weight
and
pain of life: that word is love. –Sophocles
Remember too that with each of us making even a small contribution...
Many hands make light work, – Old Chinese Proverb
Or think of Bishop Desmond Tutu who has seen such movements evolve:
"Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world."
Or if you prefer a more time-tested source, consider the words of Lao Tzu, written some 2,500 years ago:
Accomplish the great task
by a series of small acts.
So
with the blessings of those who have gone before you, go ye steadfastly
upon your journey, planting seeds of hope and light wherever and
whenever you can, dispelling the darkness and setting love free to fly
to every far corner where it can do its cleansing wonders. And blessings be
upon you if you do.
"My
friends, love is better than anger. Hope is
better than fear. Optimism is better than
despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and
optimistic. And we’ll change the world." -- Jack Layton, Canadian
Politician, 1950-2011

"Example is contagious behavior." - Charles Reade
And remember: the children are always watching....

Where, in our
world, does that warming human connection go as our children mature?
Does that precious little loving soul fall prey to the 35,000
seductive commercials that it sees every year? Does the violent
entertainment in our theatres present a more alluring ideal? Or
is it the brave new world of video games? Maybe it's the
nonstop violence that passes for news on our television sets: the "entertainment" of our day.
Where, in fact, is the little child that was once…you?
And here is a good question: why is it that our greatest teachers
always implored us to return to seeing the world “as little
children?”
But the seeds of their undoing are already sown within them and they,
confronted with the increasing numbers masses of loving hearts like the
largest trees in the forest will one day fall.
Know then
What
happens to many of us in the western world, these days especially, is
that the centre of our being,
the true “us,” the loving soul or essence that we are born with that
is at our core, our centre… becomes enclosed, encased, much as an
onion
is, in layers: layers of foreign ideas, of fears, and of unfulfilled
desires that harden into what we call our ego. This is the face we
present to the world. The ego is fired
and forged on the hard anvil of our lives’ experience, beginning
in the vulnerable and malleable years of our early childhood. This
“ego”
eventually becomes our public face, our persona, and determines our
behavior with respect to
others, the breadth and depth of our self-esteem, and how fully and
comfortably and lovingly we are able to live our lives.
Some of us love fully and well. Others, wounded in their vulnerable
childhood years, hardened by later events of their lives, learn not how
to love, nor do they experience the joy of giving, so theirs are lives
governed by much darkness and negativity...and often excessive self
service.
what is necessary is an understanding of this fact so we can forgive also know the fire is still there as embers.
